Because of the stress the students deal with due to the intensity and the pressure of the test, it causes them much of an emotional anguish within themselves. Authors Sophie Bethune and Alfie Kohn explore this horrific side of standardized testing, according to a survey taken by the American Psychology Association (APA), Students ranging from 13-17 have reported high levels of stress mostly due to tests such as the SAT and the ACT, american teens report experiences with stress that follow a similar pattern as adults, according to a new survey released today by the American Psychological Association (APA) (Sophie Bethune). Along with the pressure from parents as well as teachers, the performance of students decreases significan tly and their fear of failure causes them to feel mentally overwhelmed. The pressure of standardized testing is being inflicted to those that should not even take it. Its far more worrisome that even students who dont plan to continue their schooling after high school, and even students who are much too young to be thinking about college are subjected to a barrage of standardized tests that dont provide much useful information (4 Kohn). Although Gross makes an understandable argument stating standardized testing holds value, Gross does not take into account the mental damage that the test delivers to students. Secondly, standardized testing has another huge flaw in its grand design, it carries unfair advantages that no given tests should carry. There are companies that construct standardized and these companies also assemble programs and classes which favors the economically privileged that can afford them giving them the advantage when it comes to taking the test. Furthermore, everyone is different, in where theyre from, what theyve learned before, experiences theyve had, and the way they learn, however standardized tests treats everyone like they are the same which in this case is unfair. Author Brittany Kokoszka explores the biased aspect of standardized testing. A teacher may do an incredible job explaining material to students, however, if he or she does not have the resources that other schools have, then the students educations are compromised (Brittany Kokoszka), not everyone has the same access to resources, some schools may be well funded than other which gives the students in that school the upper hand. Those who are economically privileged can take test classes to improve and build their score whereas not everyone has that same opportunity. By having this opportunity, those kids will most likely receive higher scores and thus possess a significant unfair advantage over others who cannot afford such luxuries (Brittany Kokoszka). Whether a student gets into college should not be determined by their financial status, and this is one of the many big flaws that make standardized testing unfair. Thirdly, standardized testing not only affects students and their future but teachers and their paychecks as well. In view of the fact that standardized testing is such a crucial deal in The United States, teachers are feeling the pressure by their bosses to heavily focus their curriculum into teaching to the test. Standardized tests are used by school administrators and the public to evaluate students, schools, and teachers. Authors Ronald E. Johnson, Jerrell C. Cassady, and Stephanie Overman go in more depth of this pressure teachers receive and how that affects their students. One of the reasons why teachers are so stressed that they end up teaching to the test is because of the No Child Left Behind Act Legislation like NCLB has raised the stakes for testing, potentially tying student performance to teacher salaries and job stability, and dictating what teachers teach (Overman). Everyone is motivated by money, and teachers are no exceptions, this act forces teachers to believe th at their most important job is to prepare the kids for standardized testing and that is what they are being paid for, neglecting to teach basic life skills. Author Gross argues that standardized testing is a critical measurement of achievement in skills, knowledge, and abilities, however, the way these tests are written, taught, and taken suggests otherwise. This type of pressure that teachers exert on students tremendously impacts them as well (a) comparing self-performance to peers, (b) considering the consequences of failure, (c) low levels of confidence in performance, (d) excessive worry over evaluation, (e) causing sorrow for their parents, (f) feeling unprepared for tests, and (g) loss of self-worth (272 Ronald E. Students are not being tested for their level of skills, and their capacity for exerting their knowledge but to choose an answer out of four choices and fill in a blank bubble that ignores the students overall knowledge and limits them t o only four choices. Overall, standardized testing not only messes with students but threatens and controls teachers as well. Standardized testing causes students to know and retain things they dont have the necessity for and, acquire a skill set that is essentially idle and useless when it comes to real life and its problem. Consequently, a proposed solution consists of school boards around the nation should boycott against the use of standardized testing, as well as using the students scores to judge schools, teachers, and students which only makes matters worse. The people should all sign a petition for a standardized test free nation, Canada has done it, The United States, shouldnt fall behind. A new type of examination should be developed as a better alternative to this flawed design, an examination supported by research to prove effective. In conclusion, standardized testing has been utilized long enough and needs to be eradicated. Although, Gross, made excellent points that are understandable, it still does not out weight the tremendous amount of negative impacts. Standardized testing clearly does more harm to a student than the good Gross claims it does. Standardized testing causes students to be negatively impacted, teachers to feel the pressure to teach to the test and, it holds the unfair advantages that students shouldnt have to deal with.

In essence, both poets demonstrate an adoration for the vision possessed by a child, and an aversion to the mental state of adulthood. Blake portrays these two states of childhood and adulthood, innocence and experience, as the two epochs of human existence. He points out in his letter of complaint that strangers in the bed next to him where given more information about his condition than he was. The Code: tells us that nurses and midwifes must not discriminate in any way against people in their care. The Code shows us that nurses and midwifes must respect people right to confidentiality, this was shown in Scott’s letter that this was not the case as the people in the beds’ next to him where told more about his condition and treatment than he was. The Code also points out that nurses and midwifes must ensure that people are informed about other services and support and are given access to these. As Scott says he was depressed after his mothers death. Should the nursing staff that had the duty of care over Scott, provided services and support on the information that was given to them on his feeling of grief at the loss of his mother. They did not talk to him about it because they did not know what to say. If the nursing staff did not know how to deal or talk to Scott about this then they have a duty of care to find relative services and support for Scott. It is the nurses and midwifes responsibility through duty of care to protect and promote health and wellbeing of the people in their care. This could have been carried out by providing Scott with grief counceling for instance. As Scott was coming round after his operation he told the nurses of what he remembered. It is the nurses’ in this case according to NMC: The Code, that they ensure the people in their care are listened to and that their concerns and preferences are responded to. Scott felt the response he received with regards to the information he was given after his operation was not enough or what he had wanted. This seems to sugest that Scott was not listened to when he told the nursing staff of what he remembered of before his operation. This also seems to raise the subjest of the responsibility layed out in The Code, a failure to share with people, in a way they can understand and that it is the information they want or need to know about their health. The Code was set out to ensure best practice and to safe guard the health and wellbeing of the people in care of nurses and midwifes. It should ensure that problems are dealt with and that nurses are open and honest. It calls for nurses to explain fully and promptly to the person affected what has happened and the likely effects. 9 Free and Effective Classroom Rewards Its no secret that schools only provide the bare minimum, so teachers often need to dip into their already shallow pockets in to supplement what the school provides in the classroom. Material rewards are one easy place where we can cut corners and still remain effective educators. You really dont need to spend your money on candy, toys, stickers, and other little goodies to extrinsically motivate, reward, and recognize your students good behavior. Emphasize intrinsic motivation and teach that learning and good behavior are rewards unto themselves. Your students will rise to your heightened expectations.   Easy, Free Rewards for Your Classroom Save yourself the trouble and consider some of the free ways you can give your students a meaningful thumbs up when they do something right. Lunch Bunch   Recognize a well-behaved table group by inviting them to Lunch Bunch with the teacher. The chosen kids bring their own lunches and eat in the classroom together with you. If you have a TV, find some cartoons to watch. Or, have the kids bring their favorite CDs from home to listen to during lunch (check the lyrics first!). They can also play games when they finish eating. The children feel special because they get to stay inside and you may even find that you enjoy this unique, low-key time with the kids as much as they do. Longer Recess   This is a great one because it doesnt have to involve extra time from you. If possible, reward a child by letting them stay outside and play until a later bell. For example, after my third graders come in, the fourth graders get to play about 10 more minutes. So, I can reward a student by letting them stay out until the fourth grade bell. You may need to double-check with yard duty supervisors before doing this. Also, you probably wont want to use this one all the time. The kids do miss some instructional time and you are relying on the supervisors to help you out. Special Seats   Reward a well-behaved (or much-improved) child by letting them work at the teachers desk for an entire day. Or, you can set up a special seat on the rug and let chosen students have a chance to sit there during story time. This free reward is zero hassle for you and quite a thrill for the kids! Whole-Group Rewards   Let individual students earn points towards a whole class reward. This works especially well for students who crave attention because they will earn positive attention from the whole class for their good behavior. For example, the student can earn a table point for their table group, or a few marbles for the class marble jar. This helps difficult students feel like a real part of the group and it provides for a little positive peer pressure to keep them performing well. Read-In Party Stay away from popcorn parties that require extra money and preparation from you. Tell the kids that they can wear pajamas to school that day (discuss appropriate attire, first!). They can also bring their favorite stuffed animal and a pillow. Use the day to celebrate the joys of reading. The kids get to lounge around the room for part of the day, reading, relaxing, and savoring the joy of books. You can also add in other literary activities for a rewarding day that sends a clear message to the students: Reading is Fun! Afternoon of Art and Music   Art and music are worthy academic subjects. But, if youre like most time-strapped teachers, you cant fit enough of them into the school day. Motivate your class with this simple reward. Let the class listen to music while they work on an art project. Theyll love it and so will you! Good Phone Call Home Why do phone calls home always have to be negative? Set this standard on its head by letting parents and guardians know how great their child is doing in your class. Most students will work really hard to get this kind of individualized recognition that will make a big difference at home. This is also a wonderful opportunity to solidify your relationship with parents. They want to know that you love their child and this is an easy way to make everyone happy. Help in Another Class   This is a great one for reinforcing academic content and building self-esteem in kids who really need it. Its hard to implement in kindergarten and first grade classes, but with other grades, it works great. Recognize a worthy student by letting them help out in a lower grade for awhile. Use your professional judgment to make it work in your classroom and school environment. Hand Stamp Dont get stuck on costly and consumable stickers. Use the simple ink stamps that you already have to let a student know that they are A-okay! Simply stamp your sign of approval on the back of the childs hand. You may want to clear this with parents first, since they might not appreciate ink on their kids hand. It may sound too good to be true, but if you dont introduce material rewards in the first place, your students will never miss them. In elementary school, children are so eager to please and so pleased to receive any little special recognition. The death penalty, or capital punishment, is the first and harshest penalty for sin. Although it has evolved and changed form over the years, and is now decided upon by men playing God, it is still an acceptable, God pleasing form of punishment. I am going to tell you what capital punishment is, its history, its current role in the justice of criminals, and why I believe that it pleases God. Body: Capital punishment, simply put, is killing someone for a crime that they have committed. This crime is murder. In some countries and states, it is considered acceptable to kill the person who has taken the life of another. The methods of execution have varied since the beginning of time, but three current popular ways include the gas chamber, lethal injection, and the electric chair. My overhead shows the different ways that states used for execution in 1994. In addition to the three most popular choices, a hanging and a firing squad are also used in a few states. According to the book â€Å"Should We Have Capital Punishment† by JoAnn Bren Guernsey, these choices were made with the goal of a more humane murder in mind. The gas chamber is a small, sealed room in which the prisoner sits strapped to a chair. A lethal gas is sent through the floor of the room, and death usually takes about five minutes. Lethal injections simply involve the insertion of a needle filled with poison into a vein and injected. This procedure can be effective, but also takes long amounts of time quite often. Strawberries – Critical Essay Christopher Callaghan 12th September 2012 â€Å"Strawberries† by Edwin Morgan is a loving poem, which explores the wonders of human emotions such as love, lust and fear. The poet’s purpose in writing this piece was to educate the reader and to evoke emotions with poetic techniques. Morgan uses some extremely effective metaphors in this poem to describe his relationship with his partner: â€Å"We dipped them in sugar, looking at each other. † The sugar signifies that there is something artificial about the relationship, that it needs sweetened. Looking at each other† signifies how confident and at ease they are around each other. This lets the reader know that this is a real relationship which has matured through time. The poet also uses sentence structure to show how memories fade through time, the further the reader goes through the poem, the shorter each stanza gets. This shows that the poet wanted to write the memory down before he forgot it. The writer also uses very clever word choice to enhance the reader’s understanding of the situation: â€Å"With the two forks crossed. † This hints to the reader that the poem is in fact about two men.Morgan couldn’t obviously point this out as at the time it was written, homosexuality was illegal. This lets the reader know difficult it must have been for someone not being allowed to express their love without the fear of persecution. Welch, Jr. , chairman and CEO of General Electric, leads one of the world’s largest corporations. It is a very different corporation from the one he inherited in 1981. GE is now built around 14 distinct businesses—including aircraft engines, medical systems, engineering plastics, major appliances, NBC television, and financial services. They reflect the aggressive strategic redirection Welch unveiled soon after he became CEO. By now the story of GE’s business transformation is familiar. In 1981, Welch declared that the company would focus its operations on three â€Å"strategic circles†Ã¢â‚¬â€core manufacturing units such as lighting and locomotives, technology-intensive businesses, and services—and that each of its businesses w ould rank first or second in its global market. GE has achieved world market-share leadership in nearly all of its 14 businesses. In 1988, its 300,000 employees generated revenues of more than $50 billion and net income of $3. 4 billion. GE’s strategic redirection had essentially taken shape by the end of 1986. Since then, Welch has embarked on a more imposing challenge: building a revitalized â€Å"human engine† to animate GE’s formidable â€Å"business engine. † His program has two central objectives. First, he is championing a company-wide drive to identify and eliminate unproductive work in order to energize GE’s employees. It is neither realistic nor useful, Welch argues, to expect employees of a decidedly leaner corporation to complete all the reports, reviews, forecasts, and budgets that were standard operating procedure in more forgiving times. He is developing procedures to speed decision cycles, move information through the organiza tion, provide quick and effective feedback, and evaluate and reward managers on qualities such as openness, candor, and self-confidence. Second, and perhaps of even greater significance, Welch is leading a ransformation of attitudes at GE—struggling, in his words, to release â€Å"emotional energy† at all levels of the organization and encourage creativity and feelings of ownership and self-worth. His ultimate goal is to create an enterprise that can tap the benefits of global scale and diversity without the stifling costs of bureaucratic controls and hierarchical authority and without a managerial focus on personal power and self-perpetuation. This requires a transformation not only of systems and procedures, he argues, but also of people themselves. This interview was conducted at Welch’s office in Fairfield, Connecticut by Noel Tichy and Ram Charan. Mr. Tichy was manager of GE’s Management Education Operation from 1985 through 1987.
